THE LOGISTICS OF BUILDING BIKE ENGINE CARS

This section is intended to give you a general appreciation of the issues of installing bike engines into cars and how if approached logically building and owning one will be a fun and rewarding experience rather than an expensive nightmare.

1 Engine Mounting
It stands to reason that engines need to be securely mounted to avoid issues such as crankcase flex and twist, failures due to fatigue, gear selection issues and so on. This is further complicated by the requirement to mount the engine in such a way to maintain a low centre of gravity whilst avoiding ground clearance issues and allow propshafts and exhaust systems to line up. Additional consideration must be given to access for routine servicing and general maintenance, all areas which are all too often neglected.

2 OIL SURGE
Contrary to bikes, cars do not lean into corners which immediately makes them prone to oil surge. This condition occurs when due to acceleration, braking or cornering oil moves away from the oil pump pick up, starving the engines moving parts of oil with the inevitable catastrophic results.

The problem can be addressed in many ways from simple baffling and sump modification through to accusumping and dry sumping. The method employed will be dictated by the engine being used based on past experience. Call us to discuss your needs.

3 CLUTCH SLIP
You You are about to take a wet multi plate clutch that usually propels approximately 180 kilos through a very limited tyre contact patch and ask it to drive over 500 kilos with lots more traction and a divetrain with increased friction. The result is usually chronic clutch slip.

Here at AB Performance we offer a number of solutions ranging from simple spring kits to replacement billet clutches. We only supply products that we have used and found to work, making sure that you don’t waste your money on inferior products.

We can also modify your clutch to give you greater feel and control, an area where BEC’s often fall down.

4 GEAR CHANGE SYSTEMS
We supply two types of gearchange system, standard tunnel type or paddle shift. Both use a top quality push/pull cable rather than rods and are supplied complete with all bracketry, rose joints, cnc machined levers and paddles and all mounting plates making them a straightforward bolt in job that can be fitted in a matter of an hour. We have found the cable system to be far kinder to the gearbox (a particular problem with BEC’s) and offer far more “feel”resulting in less missed gears and more importantly increased gearbox life. Full details of these systems can be found in the products section.

5 DRIVECHAIN
The rear wheel in a motorcycle contains a cush drive system helping to absorb transitional shock loads as power is applied and eased. AB Performance supplies a resilient tube propshaft designed specifically for BEC’s which help to eliminate snatch, jerky gearchanges and smooth out power delivery. Props can be supplied to your exact requirements, lengths, lightened, xtra heavy duty joints and choice of centre bearing. We can also supply sprocket adaptors for your installation, see products

6 ENGINE MANAGEMENT AND ELECTRICS
So often an area where people struggle, modern security systems and a plethora of electronic items have made this a minefield of potential problems. We can supply modified or complete looms and ecu’s which will have your chosen engine running sweetly from day one. We are more than happy to offer advice on installations which could save you costly errors.

7 CARBURATION / FUEL INJECTION
High revving bike engines are particularly susceptible to changes in induction/ airbox design and aftermarket exhaust systems, assuming that you have changed these in your installation it will be necessary to address this issue. AB Performance supply dynojet kits and power commanders (see products) for all makes and models for home fitment or can fit them for you.

8 AIRBOX
As mentioned previously due to space issues you will probably be replacing the standard airbox, we can supply panel type filters for all BEC’s or if you are looking for something a little special we offer our own bespoke ram air box. Developed over 10 years of racing this airbox has been specifically designed for BEC’s and offers great value for money. Currently it is only available for carbed Honda Fireblade engines but new versions for injected blades and R1’s and also Suzuki Hayabusa will be available soon, watch this space!

Whilst not exhaustive we hope this section has helped to raise your awareness of some of the possible issues surrounding BEC’s. It has always been our policy to assist our customers obtain the very best from their car, ther are no “secrets” just a lot of hard learnt and expensive lessons which we hope to help you avoid. If you are commencing a build give us a ring and see what we can do for you.
